Catheterization: Intracerebral ventricular (IVC)

Intracerebral ventricular catheterization (ICV) utilizes a port implanted under the scalp to accommodate access into the cerebral ventricles. This intrathecal delivery method enables the administration of therapies directly into the central nervous system bypassing the blood-brain-barrier. The Ommaya reservoir is one example of an ICV port. It consists of a dome-shaped silicone rubber connected to a catheter and pump, which allows for convenient mixing of injected therapeutics.

Ultrasound and stereotactic guidance facilitate accuracy in catheter placement. Additional optimization includes using frameless electromagnetic image-guidance, reducing the risk of procedure-associated intracranial hemorrhaging.
