Water solubility for physical chemistry testing

Water solubility affects the bioavailability and environmental outcome of chemical substances. Chemicals with higher water solubility are more likely to be absorbed by aquatic species. More water-soluble substances also tend to degrade more readily by photolysis or hydrolysis. Water solubility is a measure of the amount of chemical substance that can dissolve in water at a specific temperature. It is expressed in mass of solute per volume of solution with units of mg/L (milligrams per liter) or ppm (parts per million). Surfactants can be used to increase the solubility of poorly soluble substances in water.
